Fireboy & Watergirl: Forest Temple is the first and best-known entry in the Fireboy and Watergirl series: a two-character puzzle platformer set in a stone temple full of pools, ramps and sliding doors. You steer a fire elemental and a water elemental through each chamber at the same time, and neither can finish without the other. It is a calm, thinking kind of game rather than a twitchy one.
On a site built around There Is No Game and its trick-the-player puzzles, this one fits the same mood from a different angle. Nothing here lies to you, but the satisfaction is similar: a room looks impossible, you stare at it for a minute, and then the answer clicks into place. Levels are short, so it suits a quick session as easily as a long one.
How to play
Every level has two exit doors, one for each character, and both must be standing in their own door to clear the room. Along the way you collect gems: red ones belong to Fireboy and blue ones to Watergirl. The gems are optional, but they decide the rating you get at the end of the level, so they are the reason to replay.
The key rule is the liquid. Fireboy walks safely through lava but is destroyed by water. Watergirl is the reverse. Green goo is deadly to both, so it is a hazard to jump over rather than a route. Each hero can cross their own colour and must find another way around the other.
Controls follow the standard layout for the series. Fireboy uses the arrow keys. Watergirl uses W, A and D to jump and move left and right. If you are playing alone, you swap between the two hands, or move one character at a time while the other waits somewhere safe. Click inside the game once so the keyboard reaches it. If the start screen shows different keys, trust the screen.
Later rooms add levers, pressure buttons, movable blocks and platforms that rise only while someone holds a switch. This is where the cooperation starts. One character often has to stand on a button so the other can pass, then the roles flip.
Tips
- Look at the whole room before moving. Find both exits and work out which pool each character must avoid.
- If a button holds a platform open, the character on it is stuck there, so send the other one through first and plan how the first gets out afterwards.
- Pushable blocks can be used as steps to reach high gems, but pushing one into a corner can trap it. Restart rather than fight a bad position.
- Do not chase every gem on the first attempt. Clear the level, then go back for a better rating.

Level Devil is the cruel cousin, a platformer where the floor and spikes betray you, so it tests nerve rather than cooperation. Odd Bot Out and The Password Game are pure puzzles with no platforming, and Brain Test 4: Tricky Friends keeps the trick-question humour in short, easy-to-pick-up rounds.
Forest Temple is a good pick if you have a friend beside you, since two people on one keyboard is the natural way to play, and it works just as well alone if you enjoy juggling two characters.
Questions about Fireboy & Watergirl: Forest Temple
