Friday Night Funkin' is a rhythm game where a song is a fight. You play Boyfriend, a kid with a microphone who has to out-sing one opponent after another, and the whole thing runs on four arrows. Notes scroll up the screen, and when each one reaches the target row you press the matching direction. Hit them cleanly and Boyfriend sings along, miss them and the opponent takes over the tune.
The original game came out of a 2020 game jam, made by Ninjamuffin99, PhantomArcade, evilsk8r and Kawai Sprite, and it grew into one of the most recognisable browser rhythm games around, with a huge modding scene. The copy here loads in the frame on this page with nothing to install.
It is an odd neighbour for a site built around There Is No Game. Nothing in it lies to you or hides a trick answer. It is a straight test of timing, and a good change of pace after a run of riddles when you want something where the only puzzle is your own fingers.
How to play
Click inside the game once so the keyboard reaches it, then use the arrow keys. Each of the four arrows matches a lane: left, down, up and right. Menus use the same keys, with Enter or Space to confirm. The start screen of the build names the exact keys, and it is worth a look before the first song because builds can differ slightly in what they accept.
During a song, the opponent's notes play first and yours follow in a call-and-response pattern. When your turn comes, press each arrow as its note lines up with the fixed arrows at the top. Long notes need the key held until the tail ends. A health bar sits at the bottom: good hits fill it toward Boyfriend, misses drain it, and if it empties the song restarts.
Tips
- Watch the notes as they approach the target row, not the row itself. Your eyes pick up the pattern earlier that way.
- Pressing keys randomly costs you more than missing a few notes, because stray presses count against you. Stay calm and press only when a note arrives.
- Rest your fingers on the arrow keys and keep your hand still. Moving your whole hand between lanes makes your timing drift.
- If the song feels out of sync, close any heavy tabs. A stuttering frame rate shifts the timing, and it is the most common cause of notes that feel late.

If you liked the quick reactions, Level Devil is a platformer where the floor and the spikes are not what they seem, so it tests nerves instead of rhythm. Resizer is a calmer puzzle about changing the size of things, and Brain Dozer is a lighter arcade pick. The headline game, There Is No Game, is the opposite of Funkin: all trickery and no timing.
Friday Night Funkin' suits short sessions best. One song takes only a couple of minutes, so it fits in between other games, and a keyboard is the comfortable way to play it.
Questions about Friday Night Funkin'
Is Friday Night Funkin' unblocked at school?
Friday Night Funkin' runs in an ordinary browser tab from thereisnogame.org, with nothing to download or install, so it plays on most school Chromebooks and work computers. If a network filter blocks the site, only that network's administrator can change it.
What are the controls in Friday Night Funkin'?
Use the arrow keys, one for each of the four lanes, and press each as its note reaches the target row. Click inside the game once first so the keys register.
Is Friday Night Funkin' free to play here?
Yes. It runs in your browser on There Is No Game with no download or account.
Can I play Friday Night Funkin' on a phone or Chromebook?
It is an HTML5 build, so it loads in a modern browser. A keyboard is the easiest way to play, so a Chromebook works better than a phone.
What happens if I miss too many notes?
The health bar drains with misses, and when it is empty the song ends and you can restart it.
