Sudoku is the plain, quiet one on a shelf full of games that lie to you. On There Is No Game most puzzles are built around a gag, a trick answer or a rule that quietly changes under your feet. Here the rules never change and nothing is hidden: a nine-by-nine grid, some numbers already filled in, and your job is to complete the rest.
That honesty is the appeal. After a few minutes of Brain Test riddles or Level Devil's traps, a puzzle where the answer is always reachable by pure logic feels like a palate cleanser. It runs in the browser with nothing to install, so it works as a break between rounds of the stranger games on the site.
A session is as long as you want it to be. You can fill a few digits while waiting for something else, or settle in and work a whole grid through.
How to play
Every row, every column and every one of the nine three-by-three boxes must contain the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. The numbers printed at the start are fixed clues; you fill the empty squares so no digit repeats in any row, column or box.
The page lists mouse or touch input: click or tap a square, then choose the number to put in it. The general controls note also mentions a retry and a hint button on most puzzles here, so look for those if you get stuck or want to start the grid over.
Tips
- Start with the digits that already appear most often in the clues. If there are already six 5s on the board, the remaining three are usually easy to place.
- Scan one box at a time and ask which squares in it can still take a given digit. When only one square is left, that is your answer.
- Look for a row or column that is nearly full. The missing number there is almost always forced.
- Do not guess. A proper Sudoku is solvable by deduction alone, so if you are tempted to guess, you have probably missed a simpler move elsewhere on the grid.
- If you hit a wall, switch to a different part of the board. A number placed over there often unlocks the stuck area.

If you like the logic side of the site, The Password Game turns rule-following into an escalating challenge, with each new requirement stacking on the last. Odd Bot Out asks you to spot what does not belong, a smaller version of the same pattern-spotting. For something less serious, Brain Test: Tricky Words and Guess the Emojis keep the puzzle spirit but reward lateral thinking rather than deduction.
Sudoku suits solo, unhurried play, on a keyboard-free phone or a laptop alike.
